Endemic species highlight

The mixed-species bird flock

Sinharaja is world-famous for its bird "waves" — flocks of a dozen or more species moving through the forest together.

Long-term studies in Sinharaja have recorded flocks with dozens of individual birds from many species. Noisy Orange-billed Babblers and Ashy-headed Laughingthrushes often lead the way, while drongos, Blue Magpies, malkohas, flycatchers and woodpeckers join in.

Why flock? More eyes spot predators sooner, and insects disturbed by one bird are snapped up by another. Experiencing a flock pass by — the forest suddenly alive with calls and colour — is one of the highlights of any visit.
